You Can Draw in 30 Days: Lessons 4-6

April 30, 2013 By Shannon Barnes Leave a Comment

I have been having so much fun these past few weeks brushing up on my art skills.  So excited to see this mini project through to the end.  Here are the results of lessons four and five:
lesson4
lesson5
lesson6
lesson6 2
Still pretty simple but again this is my refresher course and in the months to come you’ll be able to see more advanced artwork.  I truly believe that regardless of what profession you’re in, if you don’t use your skills for a considerable amount of time, you begin to lose them.  So reminding yourself of the basics can help you to get back into the swing of things. Again, I hope you guys have enjoyed this post.  Come back next week for lessons seven through nine.

You Can Draw in 30 Days: Lessons 1- 3

April 13, 2013 By Shannon Barnes Leave a Comment

As  I mentioned in a previous post, it is my goal to delve deeply into my art again.  It has been quite a few years since I have done any type of art on a consistent basis so I am well over due for some creativity in my life.  In that earlier post I shared that I would be using the book, You Can Draw in 30 Days by Mark Kistler in order to jumpstart my creativity and relearn anything that I may have lost or forgotten.  I must say I am really enjoying the process and can’t wait to see my progress on day thirty.  I really feel like a kid a again, so excited to learn and share.  Today I ‘m going to share my results with you from lessons one through three.

In lesson one, Mark shows you how to make your drawings look more 3-D by finding a light source and then shading in areas of the object.  Here are my results:

Chapter two builds on this lesson by showing you how to overlap your objects in order to create depth, making one or more objects appear closer to the eye.  Here are the results of lesson two:

Lastly lesson three is about advanced-level spheres wherein Mark teaches you how create more depth in your drawings again emploring steps learned earlier in lessons one and two. Mark really shows you how to take your drawings to the next level.  Here are the results of lesson three:

Hope you guys enjoyed.  Come back next week for lessons four through six.

I Got The Itch

March 10, 2013 By Shannon Barnes Leave a Comment

For as long as I can remember art has been a love of mine.  It was the one class I looked forward to in school next to Literature.  As child and well into my teens, every day I would create something.  Art really made me feel happy and was a great way for me to express myself or to just escape into my own little world.

For the past three years art has been tugging at me, calling me to return and create but I kept putting it off.  I didn’t feel as confident as I once did when I was younger.  I felt I didn’t have enough time or lacked the skills needed to be a good artist.  I compared myself entirely too much to others and allowed the opinions of others to negatively affect how I felt about my passion.  I just quit.

I had to humble myself.  I wanted to start right from where I left off and quickly realized I needed a lot of help. I needed to start from the beginning and re-lay the foundation of a good artist.  The same goes with any other artist whether your passion is singing, dancing, writing or even drawing.  If you go a long time without practicing and using your talent, you will get ‘rusty’.

I purchased a book on Amazon.com called, ‘You Can Draw in 30 Days’ by Mark Kistler.  I love this book because it reminds me of all the art classes I took throughout all my years of school.  Over the next month I will be completing this book and will share with you each week the results from each lesson.  Feel free to leave any comments on what you see.  Be constructive and not cruel as this is a positive environment.
